Scar Contracture Release, Removal or Revision

What Is It?

This procedure is done to improve or minimize the appearance of scars, restore function, and correct disfigurement resulting from an injury, lesion, or previous surgery.

Types of Scars

There are several types of scars, such as Keloid, Hypertrophic scars and scar contractures.

Treatment Options

While no scar can be removed, the appearance of a scar can be improved, making it less obvious through the injection or application of certain steroid medications or through surgical procedures. Scars in the hand particularly, may cause contractures that impede the function of the hand, if wrongly placed.

While scar revision is normally safe, there is always the possibility of complications. These may include infection, bleeding, a reaction to the anesthesia, or the recurrence of an unsightly scar. These risks can be reduced with good surgical planning, gentle soft tissue handling and good post-operative care and therapy.
