Scar Contracture release, removal or revision.
This procedure is done to improve or minimize the appearance of scars, restore function, and correct disfigurement resulting from an injury, lesion, or previous surgery.
There are several types of scars, such as Keloid, Hypertrophic Scars and scar contractures.
While no scar can be removed, the appearance of a scar can be improved, making it less obvious through the injection or application of certain steroid medications or through surgical procedures. Scars particularly in the hand if wrongly placed may cause contractures and this impedes the function of the hand.
While scar revision is normally safe, there is always the possibility of complications. These may include infection, bleeding, a reaction to the anesthesia, or the recurrence of an unsightly scar.
We recognize that these risks can be reduced through seeking help from a qualified surgeon. With good surgical planning, gentle soft tissue handling and good post-operative care and therapy, the results of scar revision and contracture releases can be very rewarding.
Below is a case of a severe scar contracture. This prevents the index finger from full extension. A multiple Z plasties will help correct this deformity.
